Answering Laura's Excellent Questions

A couple of days a ago Laura sent me a message:

"Would you mind answering these questions? Only if you are comfortable in answering them, of course.
First of all, what was it like in the concentration camp? I know lots of people ask this question, but, I mean, what was bunking like, what did you eat, and did you have roll call?
My second question is, where did you work? Mr. Easter said that Auschwitz III was mostly a forced labor camp, so, did you have a specific line of work that you did? Were… Continue

I am working on a project mapping the death marches from Auschwitz and Auschwitz subcamps at the US Holocaust Memorial museum. I read through chapter 16 of your book Scheisshaus Luck, and I was wondering whether you would be able to give me some details from your experience from the death march. Do you remember the towns you passed through or even some stopping points? Some names of the people who marched with you in your column. The duration of the march. If you are able to remember any of this information that would be very helpful.

Thank you very much for connecting with me through the Maine Holocaust Education Network. I appreciated the chance to read your remarks posted to Laura and am glad to know about your recently published memoir, Scheisshaus Luck. I am a high school librarian and always trying to expand our collection of books about the Holocaust.

My name is Pierre Berg. I am a Holocaust survivor. I am a gentile. I spent 18 months in different Nazi concentration camps, which included 12 months in Auschwitz. My memoir, Scheisshaus Luck has just been publsihed by AMACOM Books.

“[A] harrowing story….A worthy supplement to the reports of Primo Levi and Elie Wiesel.” Kirkus Reviews

The language in my memoir is rough, and some of the things that I wrote about might not be suitable for young teens. This is something your parents and teachers will be able to decide. I didn't want to sugar-coat what I went through. That would have been a disservice to all of those who were murdered by the Nazis.

Hello. Once again, thank you for joining : ) I have some questions for you to answer if you want or feel comfortable answering them. First I was wondering if any one else from your family or friends got sent to a concentration camp. Do you know many people who were sent to one? Were you friends with any German people before things got bad? Have you meet any Nazis after the holocaust has been over? If you did, and they wanted forgiveness and was sincere, do you think you would forgive him? Sorry if you think any of them are too personal. If you do find any of them too personal or just don't want to answer then feel free to just tell me. I don't mean to be a hassle. I'll probably think of more questions later but for now thats all I have. Thank you!

Hi Pierre -
Would you be willing to repost the comments you left for Laura as a blog post for everyone to read. I'm not sure how many people here look at what others post on another person's Comment Wall and I think it would be great if everyone read about your experience. I'm sure once Laura reads your post and shares it with the class you will have other questions.

My second question is, where did you work? Mr. Easter said that Auschwitz III was mostly a forced labor camp, so, did you have a specific line of work that you did? Were there any bonuses for your job, like extra food or something?
My last question is this. How did you end up in Auschwitz if you consider yourself Gentile? Where you in the wrong place at the wrong time, or did the Nazis consider you Jewish because of your relatives or something?
